Once upon a time Henry Siegman was an Orthodox Rabbi who knew that Israel was created to be the homeland of the Jewish people in the territory from which they had been driven. He knew that policies adopted by the leadership of the Jewish people both in in Israel and the diaspora were intended to advance the interests of the Jewish people, taking into account the circumstances and competing demands of others because the Jews were moral and fair-minded despite the uniquely horrific treatment they had suffered. Henry Siegman has turned his back on all this. He believes that Israel was created to serve the interests of other nations seeking to impose a vision of reality unencumbered by fair understanding of the political objectives of the Arab parties that value destruction of Israel above mutual acceptance and human progress. He believes that the Jews depend on the goodwill of those who either participated in their slaughter or accepted it with equanimity and so must concede rather than resist their critically flawed demands. He has become accustomed to the comforts and praise of patrons who prefer the convenience of cooperation with old money to the exhilarating challenge of creating an authentically Jewish and ethical state in a cruel world that tolerates genocide and slavery almost anywhere, but cannot abide reasonable provisions for self-defense in the face of unending howls to annihilate the Jews of Israel. today he is nothing more than a coward, loyal to his own material self interest. Were he my son, I would sit shiva for him.
