Fascinating article. A key difference between US and Israeli congregations is that in America the shul is a major communal institution. Your family pays a high membership fee, it employs numerous full-time staff, you hold Bar Mitzvahs and weddings there, etc. None of this obtains in Israel. Families in a Jewish US suburb cannot easily drop out and start another competing institution. But easy to do for singles in Manhattan.
