The battle between the IDF as a peoples' army and a Jewish army, or as Anshell Pfeffer more aptly calls, it the army of the Lord, is really the battle for the future of our nation. By the way Benny Gantz also has face to face experience with extremist orthodoxy having commanded the forces in Hebron after the Goldstein massacre. Yagil Levy has written 2 books - inter alia- that explain what created the conditions for this: Israel's Materialist Militarism and Who Governs the Military. The emerging picture is one that as with so much else of deep concern to the nation, demands a reaction from the secular majority - middle Israel. And the reason why soldiers react with the complacency Pfeffer describes when the issue of choosing between religious and secular norms is that middle Israel is both complacent and ignorant. Middle Israel has basically gone to sleep, it doesn't want to be worried about this, in the same way it doesn't want to be worried about the erosion of its democracy, and of its society of law and order, about social protest, the occupation, the lack of a clear future vision from its political class, the lack of trust in its political class. Until Middle Israel wakes up, the religious and their right wing nationalist buddies continue to tear the country apart.
