In the short term Israel has secured a win – the House is dominated by right wing Republicans and the religious right. In the long and medium term Israel is in deep, deep shit! The demographic trends in the US are increasingly liberal and Democratic – and Israel and AIPAC have nailed their colors to the mast of the far Republican right. If that ship sinks… I think many Israelis are deluded in their belief that in Washington they have friends. The reality is pretty different –AIPAC is loathed and by extension so are the Israelis. The reality is that official Washington feels bullied by the Israelis, scared by AIPAC’s heavy handed lynching of anyone perceived as anti-Israeli-policy. The Helen Thomas affair left a very bad taste in many mouths – the woman was appallingly treated – and many people I know who publicly are “pro-Israel” will say so. Most of them would see “turn-about” as fair. Meanwhile, US Jews – the non-orthodox at least, are better informed about Isreal and its policies than most other US citizens, and they are increasingly turned-off. I don’t think anyone in Israel seems to understand how deep the recent dislike has become, and how rapidly US sentiment could get very very hostile. The sentiment is after all, sub rosa, already very hostile.

Israel was soft on Jewish terrorists in the 1980s - will history repeat itself?

Israel's angry, bitter left must reclaim the language of hope

We leftists whine and complain, we only talk about how bleak and hopeless life is in Israel. We alienate all those Israelis whose support we need to bring political change.
