It is not the upgrading of Ariel College to a so called univeristy status or that change in status that affects the internal currents of Palestinian social or political life. It is the very presence of the college and the colony in which it is located which is the problem. It is not a question whether the Jews living in Ariel treat the surrounding Arabs nicely or not. The claim that Arabs are treated better in Ariel than in Kfar tapuach or Beit El is beside the point. The fact is that Ariel is where it is precisely to create a political fact on the ground of territory claim as part of the nascent State of Palestine. The college is one of many institutions in that place that clearly says to the Palestinians: "this is our place, not yours. Further, we shall not be moved and we realize that our location will affect the viability and contiguity of your state. We are here to prevent you from having what you want. If you want a state you'll just have to build around us." This is why this colony and its college now dafkaed into a "univerity" is an impediment to peace and justifies the AUT boycott.
