By resisting pressure to create a 'Palestinian State' in the disputed territories, Sharon chose to retain control of Judea and Samaria or if you prefer "The West Bank" as collateral for the unilateral withdrawal from Gaza. It was the long awaited opportunity for 'The Palestinians' to show Israel and the world what they had in mind for the 'Palestinian' homeland, they so badly yearned for, supposedly. Yet immediately, the gift greenhouses, meant to spur Gaza job growth were destroyed and Gaza became a launch pad for attacks upon Israel. This terrorist enclave was eventually taken over by the extremist Hamas, via popular vote. Obviously if Israel had withdrawn from all of the disputed territories, the Hamas model would, no doubt have prevailed there as well! Add on the Fall of Mubarak and rise of Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, Israel's loss of Turkey to Iran, Lebanon's transformation into Iran's puppet and generalized widespread unpredictable destabilization throughout the region, and you have a game changer. The entire concept of defensible borders for Israel must be reviewed and re-calibrated. That will not be easy nor quick. Israel is in no position to go back to The 'Auschwitz Borders' . Haaretz needs to, with all due respect, acknowledge these realities, if it truly wishes to be "progressive".
