It is quite unsophisticated to assume that Sharon did not fully understand the implications of the disengagement from Gaza creating a "Hamas-stan". Rather, it seems that from the Israeli perspective, this was the best choice for the immediate future. Hamas in Gaza is strategically more managable and attackable than in Judea and Samaria. America will now see that the only thing Palestinians may accomplish is the creation of another terrorist state that can be used to threaten america's strategic and security interests. Hamas being occupied in attempting to control Gaza allows the PA the time and ability to get control over the other territories that the Palestinians are likely to receive. Most importantly Hamas in Gaza functions as a showplace for the international community as to the fact that the Palestinians will be incapable of civilized self-government for years to come, reducing the pressure on Israel to ceede more territory. Sharon has boxed the Palestinians into a corner and has fufilled the adage " be careful what you wish for" as it relates to the international community clamoring for a Palestinian state. Now it becomes their problem too.
