Israel is not under "existential threat." Israel is the world's fifth or sixth most powerful nuclear-armed nation (depending on who you ask). Germany recently confirmed that they have known for years that Israel arms their Dolphin class submarines with nuclear-tipped cruise missiles. Documents that surfaced after the collapse of the Apartheid government of South Africa (a clue for the present Apartheid government of Israel) prove Israel was selling clandestine nuclear weapons to other countries, the very activity which the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty is intended to prevent. Israel had never signed the NNPT, nor does it allow IAEA inspections, despite repeated requests from both the United States and the United Nations. Yet Israel still screams "Existential threat" as their excuse for continued unprovoked attacks against other countries, such as the recent bombings inside Syria. Already the Knesset is claiming they "must"attack Iran by 2014, again waving around "Existential threat" as their excuse, even though Iran has not invaded another country ion a war of aggression in over 200 years; quite a contract with Israel, which cannot seem to go 6 months without attacking someone. Hawking is right. Israel is an apartheid state. Israel's attempt to demonize him is already backflashing as the world sees Israel as the bully not only against the Palestinians, but now against a man in a wheel chair.
