I share your disgust/disappointment with the Jew who engages the coming day with the attitude you describe. However, I really hope that readers understand that your Jew is shallow, misguided, and probably uneducated; and almost doesn't exist at all. Jews who don't care about the religion don't believe yom kippur does anything, Jews who do care will almost always have a more sophisticated understanding of the process of teshuva than viewing it as a automatic wash. So though I share your despair at the situation as you present it, I would like to cheer you up by pointing out that the situation is not as you present it.
