If he had said that "Jews have a tradition to excel in academics" would that have raised a storm too? There certainly is a cultural value in achievement and there are thousands of "my son the doctor" jokes to prove it (mostly told by Jews). There is an equation of "jewish achievement" = "jewish wealth" = "jewish influence". If the Reform movement only spoke to it's own members no political candidate would waste his time speaking to them. It is only because they can raise the money to fund his campaign that he is there in the first place.
