This is for Yigal Mashiach. It may amuse you. I am an Ashkenazi, on both sides: Russia/Poland on the one, Latvia on the other (Riga- home to many distinguished Ashkenazim). But this was not good enough for a novel writing, early feminist aunt on the Russian Polish side (though born in Victorian England). She maintained against all the evidence that in fact her side of the family came from: Valencia. For her, and many other European Jews, to be a Sefardi from Spain was to be an aristocrat. There was no greater yichus than that. And she too lived in Haifa, on Mount Carmel. Hope you enjoy that, Yigal! (Yaakov?)
