The writer blames the minority American Jewish community for failing to establish a cultural and religious identity amongst its young, and she implies that the enemy is secularism. In the majority Jewish state of Israel the enemy is defined as 'those unlike us' and it is the State that determines who and what 'the other' is. An ethnic and religious identity will thrive only when the desire to establish an identity comes from within, not when it is forced upon you- that goes for mandatory religious training as well as State defining who is, and isn't a 'real Jew'.
