I am all in favor of secular Jewish culture, but to perpetuate it you need Jews. So I wonder to what extent it is sustainable in the U.S. or anywhere else outside of Israel. Being Jewish is increasingly a choice in the diaspora, and to willingly embrace this identity one requires a certain knowledge of history, and familiarity with traditions. Bagels, lox, and Jon Stewart do not cut it.
