Reuven Pedatzur attempts to demonstrate that the secular Cold War concept of Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD) could promote stability if applied in the Islamic Middle East. He is dead wrong. Most egregiously he holds up the emergence of the Pakistan / India nuclear standoff as a potential model for the Israel / Muslim scenario. It is well known that Dr. Kahn, the director of the Pakistani nuclear program, was selling the technology to any and all Muslim bidders. If not for the direct threat from President Bush against Pakistan, he would still have been operating all these years and a Muslim terrorist nuke would already be circulating. So much for "stability". There can be no doubt that the next detonation of a nuclear device in world history will be a clandestine operation. If Iran gets one or more nukes, it will use a proxy group to deliver it, even as it usses Hizbollah conventionally today. Then Reuven Pedatzur can tell us what went wrong.
