Israel's problem is like that of the US -- an excessive reliance on military power to control situations which require other approaches, usually accepting less than total control. Miserable as life is for Sderot, it is nothing compared to the misery of the Palestinians. If instead of a zero sum game we look for a win win solution and help the Palestinians make a truly viable state that would be a national home for them just as Israel is a national home for the Jews, we would have an ally for development and prosperity instead of a deadly enemy. We would have to give up the settlements and negotiate mutually advantageous swaps of areas on either side of the green line, but in spite of the success of Hamas and Hizbolla, neither we nor our immediate neighbors want to turn into a theocratic state, but we are all heading that way.
