Obama needs the peace fakery to have it mounted as a wall trophy during the midterm elections. The assumption will be that Obama is making an historic peace. The reality is that the peace fakery is only a facade, and a very thin unconvincing facade at that. Still, it won't harm Obama unless it completely falls apart and fails at this critical juncture. Because of this, he needs Abbas. In order to keep Abbas on board, he needs Israel to suspend settlement construction. Netanyahu knows this and will make Obama pay a very high price indeed. In the end, it will be Israels usual deal of something for nothing, but it will have enough veneer to allow Abbas to stay. It will have enough flexibility to allow the settlers to build. It will be enough for Obama to take to the midterms. Afterwards of course, it will all fall apart, but who cares?

Netanyahu is encouraged by the fact that some of his critics are starting to cast doubt on the deal, and even to echo his arguments against it.17:39 30.07.15 | 6 comments
