I cried a small tear when I read your excellent article on Ruth and Israeli policies toward immigrants and the Diaspora. Why? Because I am an American Jew who is more and more divorced from Israeli policies, character and ethics. How naive am I? I once thought that Israel could do no wrong. I was proud to be a Jew, an American and a supporter of the new nation of Israel. As you wrote, I am dismayed that Jews and others cannot come to Israel and become an equal member of its society, cannot vote, cannot become a citizen (because, like I, we are not religious, nor do we want to convert). I must also tell you that I was more than dismayed at the conduct of Israeli politicians in recent years. I shudder at some of the activities of the IDF toward civilians, whether they be Palestinians or Israeli teenagers in the streets. I cringe when Israeli jets take to the air because I fear that they will rocket a home with women, children and other innocents. I cry when I read about the weapons
