All these Americans who claim to have such a passion for Israel, why don't you move there? Why are you writing of your passion from the comfort of your home in North Carolina? Why is it that the most radical Jewish Israelis all speak with a Brooklyn accent? The initial impetus for establishing the State of Israel was based on a certain idealism and a need to finally have a place to call home for people who associated with a certain archetype of being a Jew. A place to call home free from European anti-semitism and persecution. Today, however, I think that the Israeli population is still in the process of digesting what it is that makes a jew. Is it some genetic DNA sequence? If so, then many of the Palestinians hold this same DNA as has been proven by recent scientific analysis of bones from archeological digs. Is it that they all worship Yahweh The Mountain God? That does not even seem to be consistent throughout the Israeli population and by strict Orthodox standards many people who call themselves Jews would not even qualify. Is it that there is some cultural connection? That does not seem to be the reality as within Israel there is such stratification. Ashenazi, Sephardic, Mizrahi so many different flavors. The cultural chasm between an Ethiopian Jew and a 'white' German Jew is beyond enormous. Is it some shared common language? Hardly, since the newest Russian Jewish immigrants don't even speak a lick of Hebrew. My prediction is that in a few hundred years from now, when science has finally wiped out the last vestige of these primitive desert nomad religions, people will look back and remark how ludicrous their ancestors were. Yahweh/Allah/The Cloud God will go the way of Zeus and people will visit Israel/Palestine as a quaint Disneyesque tourist spot in the same way they visit the Pantheon in Rome or Zoroastrian temples of Persia.
