How can the Chair of an English Department write such a poorly constructed and badly worded sentence as, "A colleague condescended: "I never liked Roth," a put-down to me, a Miltonist and teacher of Renaissance literature, who really doesn't know better.", let alone admit to not having read Munro? If he notices it at all, Roth must be hugely embarrassed by the griping from his Jewish supporters (even if this piece isn't as grim as The Tablet's laboured "satire").
