This is an enormous blunder by Israel. Shocking. One can't help but feel that Israel is moving farther and farther away from the sort of standards that are expected of allies of the US and Europe. That pace has quickened over the last 3-5 years, and the Jewish state is now hurtling toward the sort of character and baffling internal logic that one normally associates with crack-pot regimes in Pyongyang or Tehran. This is going to have massive repurcussions. My feeling is that Western governments have been re-assessing their relationship with Israel recently. Cast Lead, the Dubai passport fiasco, the Goldstone Report, the hounding of human rights groups within Israel; now this. One of the cornerstones- we're told- of Israel's relationship with the US and Europe are its 'shared values' as a liberal democracy. We look at Israel and its Arab neighbours, and see more of ourselves in Israel. Surely this is no longer the case? There has been a second Zionist revolution. It's been quiet and insidious, but it's pretty much complete. The Israel of Bibi & Lieberman; of white phosphorous and war crimes, of Im Tirtzu and creeping apartheid, is not the Israel of Ben Gurion, kibbutzim, and blooming deserts. RIP Israel. You nearly made it......
