I have seen curriculum in the 3 Western countries, and for the last 30-40 years, there has been a steady decline in both standards of technical competency and analytical ability ("critical thinking"). The Post Modern Flower Child driven buzzphrase is "..as long as they develop self esteem...", as if "self esteem" is an isolated commodity which has nothing to do with objective achievement or the outside world... Education has gone from being a means to comprehend, understand, survive, develop and expand in the real world; to being a subjective story telling exercise without absolute and/or objective values and standards; and a goal of remaining in an infantile or adolescent social and mental state for as long as possible. And-IMO, the "profession" where this is most reflected is journalism...
