After reading "Blindness of the Peace-Seekers" a second time and thinking about Sam Rose's response in "Hamas and democracy," I think what Mr Eldar is actually expressing is his despair over the current state of affairs. Whichever way you turn it doesn't look good. Sharon, the Israeli right, the PA and Hamas have all been conducting themselves in bad faith while Israeli progressives (the "left-lite") have compromised themselves beyond recognition. In dark times like these there are plenty of days when it's hard to keep the faith. I agree with some of the other readers that it is better to go ahead and accept the outcome of Palestinian elections. Israel would have a much easier time dealing with a Palestinian state set on its annihilation, than it would administering hostile territories. And who knows, once Palestine becomes a reality, perhaps the imperative to get on with life and to thrive will overtake fantasies of revenge.
