If he'd said 'a thousand,' we'd know he'd pulled the number out of a hat. Saying, '1,724' would have made matters even worse. But '1,500'? He's a clever boy. Thinks on his feet. The funny bit is that he's going to wind up vilified by everyone on all sides -- but from a strictly selfish point of view, he's probably the ideal leader for Israel right now. You'd be in serious trouble with Sharon -- and might be cornered into making something other than the best deal possible with Rabin.
