I am Jewish but fail to find the Pope's statements offensive. Perhaps somebody could explain to me why they are. Every thinking person surely delves into why there was no Divine intervention to halt the Shoah. The obvious and in some ways most appealling answer is there was no intervention because there is no paternalistic creator watching over us. Furthermore why has G-d not enforced his monopoly rights by now and struck people down who kill in his name? Or are humans pawns in some heavenly Machiavellian game, to be manipulated to suit a divine purpose? If so, those who have experienced loss in the Shoah or at the hands of any catstrophe caused by those who claim to be acting in G-d's name have every right to be angry at Him, for then he is ultimately pulling the strings by not intervening.
