Dear Patrick, Thanks for taking the trouble to read and comment on my article I too do not like the occupation, that why I wrote the article. But I think your allegations, while well intended are unfair - Firstly because there is no other country which faces the existential threats that Isrrael does. Hamas and Iran for example are committed to wiping the Jewish state off the face of the earth, and Iran is preparing the weaponry to do so. That is not a dispute about territory - its about the ssurvival of a country - in such circumstances, israelis are correcct to be cautious about security. Secondly becuase while Israel does occupy land - its humna rights record is far far better than almost all arab countries. look at wwhat is going on in Syria, try letting a woman drive a car in Saudi Arabia or being gay in Iran. There is a conflict going on in Israel, but actually Israel goes to enormous lengths to minimise civilian casualties and although every innocent death is a tragedy - it is pretty successful at doing so. If you have not yet visited Israel, I suggest you come here and see the facts for yourself - there is stuff to improve, but thankfully there is a free press here which is why I am able to be very critical of my country. Best wishes Gideon

Why we don't know how to pick our leaders

Our craving for ideology means that we are partial to ideological leaders. But we need leaders who will make smart decisions that are aligned with the public interest.
