The Israeli government and Hamas are both absolutists, each wants the entire land between the Med and the Jordan (or in Israel's case if not the entire land at least so much that it makes the establishment of a viable Palestinian state impossible) for ideological reasons. Equally, neither wants Abbas to be in a position to show whether he genuinely wants a 2-state settlement and resolution based on various blueprints that have been thrashed out over the years. They seek to do everything they can to make it impossible to resume negotiations. Hamas may be a terrorist group and Israel a sovereign country but in their goals neither is very different from each other.
