    There has already been an attempt to dissociate the Jewish nation, from the Jewish religion. In 1958, the Interior minister of Israel,Bar Yehuda, decided that any citizen of Israel who declared to be Jewish, should be recognized as a Jew. But unfortunately, the religious parties who hold the balance of power, opposed their veto to this policy. It's sad, but you can't deny that a large section of the Israeli siciety perceives the Jewish identity as a national one, not a spiritual one. By the way, most non-Jewish immigrants who immigrated to Israel from the USSR, consider themselves Jewish. Obviously, they don't perceive their Jewish identity as a religious one.
