If there is to be a "new liberal Zionism" it will have to more like the original version. The first, and truest Zionists were Socialists and idealists. They felt the need for a national home for the Jewish people, they were not consciously colonialists, nor were they politicians with dreams of grandeur. All claims to the land because 80 generations ago our great-great, etc, grand mothers lived here are, at the best, weak excuses for self-interested colonial activity. We are here because the original Jewish immigrates were no more prescient than any other surprised to-be colonialists. We needed a home and found a home, but a home already inhabited for generations by a people denied a national identity by successive foreign overlords. Since by now it should be amply obvious that we are not going to leave, nor are the Palestinians; there is a choice to be made by us, and that is to either continue to colonize land which is not ours until Zionism becomes only another synonym for racism, or to convince the Palestinians, by our actions, that we have finally come to realize that Switzerland is a better model for both peoples than is Kosovo or Rwanda. In order to demonstrate our new found understanding, we must apologize to the Palestinian people who have suffered because of Nazi crimes against the Jews. We are the uninvited guest who must prove that he can be a good and useful neighbor. To do we must accept the responsibility for our part of the conflict; denial is a trap; you know that you are paranoid when nothing is your fault! Faced with the choice of eternal conflict, or a peace with a one time enemy who wishes to make amends, it is not inconceivable that the Palestinian people would force their extremists to stop providing excuses for Israeli intransigence

Why Britain’s Labour Party has suddenly become synonymous with anti-Semitism

When senior party members spout vile anti-Jewish theories and at the same time insist they are in no way anti-Semites, they truly believe they are not lying.

Head of J Street Israel refuses to take the blame for lack of peace

Yael Patir, Israel director of the left-leaning U.S. Jewish body, sat down with Haaretz to talk about Trump, the gap between U.S. and Israeli Jews, and the growing anger at the Israeli peace camp. Though she concedes boycott efforts by some on the left have a negative effect, she rejects calls to keep peace efforts local.
