Religion is personal - that is until you become a cardinal of the church. He was born a Jew and died a Jew, but as a brain-washed, scared child he abandoned his faith - and any religion that would exploit such a child in that situation, is not worthy. Unfortunately, that church did far worse in kidnapping Jewish children into the church, never allowing their parents to see them again. He left his faith as a child but remained there as an adult. His mother, I'm sure, would have been horrified.
