israel needs recognition as a Jewish state for more than one reason. Firstly the palestinians see all of Israel as being part of Palestine, just the way the Israeli settlers see Judea & Samaria as being part of greater Israel palestinians see Israel as being part of greater Palestine. Anybody who seriously thinks that they are going to forever be satisfied with a non viable state in 22% of mandate Palatine is kidding themselves. Two states is getting a foot in the door which will lead to expansion. It also kills all chances of right or return because now they are admitting Israel belongs to Jews not us so we need to just face the facts there will never be a ROR. There is also the issue of Israeli arabs almost all of whom do not recognise Israel as being a Jewish state and want it changed to a neutral state of the citizens and palestinians support those demands. If the palestinians are forced to recognise Israel as a Jewish state then the arabs living in Israel have lost their most important ally because they have admitted Israel is a state belong to Jews not arabs. So recognition of Israel as a Jewish state is essential for a number of things. This is not just Netanyahus demand Sharon, Olmert, Barak and Peres all considered palestinians recognising Israel as a Jewish state an essential demand. Lapid of course would be delighted if the palestinians didn't recognise Israel as a Jewish state considering he would be delighted if Israel did give up its Jewish identity because the man really does not like anything to do with Judaism ( not just hared ) so if he was given a choice religion neutral state or Jewish one he would go for religion neutral so he is hardly a neutral bystander. He should also not be making these comments at all because he has no official role in negotiations with palestinians they are being held by Livni & Bibi and they are both insisting on palestinian recognition of Israel as a Jewish state. Lapid is only stirring up trouble and making negotiation harder if the official negotiators are demanding one thing and Lapid then says on the record something entirely different. Lapid lost alot of support from the left with his budget now he is trying to get back into their good books by getting involved in the peace process even though its not at an official level, he wants to make his voice heard and the leftists who like him are not interested in the Jewish state concept think Lapid is great he is not asking demands the palestinians do not want to make.
