Relatively speaking religious conflict has killed more people than the "secular ideologies" of the 20th century (what is ideology but a surrogate of religious feeling?). The 30-Years War reduced the population of Central Europe by 30%! The witch-hunts and crusades of the Medieval period killed unknown millions of people. I must protest. Religion and religious belief, even the fervent belief in ideology that is its sister, is the root of the basest and most violent of human acts.
