The US vetoed the Palestinian resolution and will most certainly veto a Turkish resolution on the flotilla. Both are legal issues which impinge the most fundamental principle of international law. What has the US and Israel achieved? (1) A single miserable veto does not wipe out the will of 120 members. The resolution has been accepted as far as the world is concerned. (2) Sanctions do not require SC resolutions. (3) The US has forfeited its moderating role. Europe will take over. Expect increased support for the unilateral approach and sanctions against Israel. (4) Calls for reforming the security council will increase. The remaining permanent members will not like that. They will distance themselves from the villain. ADDITIONAL THOUGHTS: Obama has secured the backing of the Jewish lobby; what else has he secured? (1) He is the laughingstock of the world. He will be remembered only as the first black president of the US. (2) He is a weakling desperately chasing after a second term at the expense of country and principles. (3) As sanctions loom, American business will take note. No Jewish vote will help Obama when corporate America turns against him. Well, Mr. President. I hope you have also received a fat checque from AIPAC, because that is all you are gonna keep. And by the way, about that peace prize….
