Recognising Israel's Arabs would do far more for Israel's security than recognising it as a Jewish state. - Comment - Israel News | Haaretz Daily Newspaper

Israel's current tactic seems to be to hold a gun to the Pals head and say 'you will never be free unless you come to love and acknowledge Israel as a Jewish state'. A forced recognition by the Pals of Israel as a Jewish state achieves nothing. It can easilybe revoked. In fact it's worse than that because it alienates the very people who should be helping ensure Israel's secure future in the Middle East, Israeli Arabs. Security for a country in an area comes from developing racial, commercial and all sorts of other links with its neighbours. If you know and get on with your neighbours you won't want to kill them. Because of religious idiocy in the area, intermarriage between Jews and Arabs is going to be a tricky one. The language and cuklture bariers between a Jew from New York or Russia and a local Arab don't help either. The people who can bridge all these gaps, if Israel helps them do so, are israel's Arabs. Despite discrimination they have not openly rebelled and polls show they want to stay Israelis. Instead of ghettoizing them, and making their contacts with other Arab countries as difficult as possible, Israel should be encouraging them to move into Jewish areas and to go out and make contacts with Arabs in neighbouring countires. If you have Lebanese, and Syrian and Egyptian brides coming into Israel in sufficient numbers, and other contacts multiply too, Israel wil eventually have the peace it craves.
