Sure there is: to take the wind out of Netanyahu's sails. If Hamas recognized Israel tomorrow, dropped that kidnapped soldier off at a border crossing, and said "Here we are we're ready to talk seriously following Obama's suggestions" how could Israel evade sitting down and talking? Whether this move would play well at home for Hamas is another thing. Sometimes strength is a weakness.
