For 30 years successive Israeli governments have overtly and covertly encouraged and supported the settlement of the West bank. While world governments have protested strongly or weakly, Israel has for reasons of its own politics has promoted the idea that the settlement issue was one for negotiation all the while supporting their growth. Now the chickens have come home to roost, so to speak. Now an American President and the rest of the world has made clear that the status quo is unacceptable in terms of regional stability. The settlements have to be dealt with. The issue can no longer be ignored. The Palestinians are not going to decamp and move out. Israeli citizens have been let down by their leaders for years. Keeping the W. bank was never in the cards, facts on the ground not with standing. T The pain that will have to be endured for peace, will be less than the pain from perpetual conflict. Only a true statesman will be able to bring Israel out of the darkness of its past.
