How strange is it that, in an age of heightened UN activism and US military ambition that the world zeroes in on Israel's presence in the West Bank as "illegal." Israel should emphasize to the world in its hasbara that the occupation is really A PEACEKEEPING MISSION. No different from Australia's policing role in the South Pacific (ie, East Timor, Solomon Islands), NATO's presence in Kosovo, France's presence in West Africa, South Africa (POST-APARTHEID)'s policeman role in Southern Africa, etc. Israel's presence may not be "UN-approved" or "multilateral," but it serves the IDENTICAL purpose of shoring up a failed state (the PA), protecting persecuted minorities (the Christians from Islamist/Hamas violence), building infrastructure, promoting investment, functioning as a stabilizer, and providing Palestinians jobs. We must look at Israel in COMPARATIVE PERSPECTIVE, for it shares so much in common with so many others across the world.
