'Judaism is not a race, but an obligation toward the rest of nations to lead with our morals and behaviors...' Etc. I'm always ambivalent when I read this sort of thing. On the one hand, it is refreshing to see so many of a people who can be so critical of their own behavior. Perhaps a flaw -- but not as bad a one as the opposite tendency! On the other hand, there is a certain element of self-congratulation in all this: 'us Jews are so moral -- how can we behave like this?' Perhaps the morality was only a function of powerlessness. After all, it's easy for the ninety eight pound weakling to not be a bully -- and no doubt ghetto jews were able to refrain from oppressing the gentiles around them. Well, now the Jews have power -- and what do we see? It's certainly not clear that they are any more moral than anyone else.
