'So how can any sane person even consider the idea of anyone killing a human for religious purposes?' Irrelevant, but one is tempted to imagine you teleported back to Mexico City, circa 1500 a.d. Incredulity and stammered objections as you are led up to the sacrificial altar... Many peoples have found sacrificing other people a fine vehicle for expressing their religious feelings. Anyway, whether Toaff's claim is accurate or whether it was even made (since we aren't to be allowed to read the book, we'll never know) is really secondary. What is spectacular is the reaction to Toaff's book -- and what that reaction implies. I read little of contemporary significance into what some fringe group of medieval Jews may or may not have done. I read considerable significance into the reaction of what appears to be a sizable portion of contemporary Jewry. Indeed, the unanimity of the howling is remarkable. It's vaguely understandable but extremely regrettable.
