The French did not strike against an emerging Nazi Germany because of their confidence in the Maginot line. They did not attack Germany because of the trauma of WW1 was still fresh in their minds. In fact there was a feeling in France in some quarters that they would have prefered to live under German hegemony rather then feed bodies into the meat grinder of another war. It seems like there is still that lingering fear that permeates the French mindset.
