"Its hebrews land jew or not. Why do they avoid the word hebrews" Hebrew is the name of the language, "Ivrith" in Hebrew. It was an epithet for Abraham, Ha'ivri, the one who crossed the river (Euphrates) from Mesopotamia to Canaan. Muslims use the epithet a-Khalil, the Friend (of God). Also their name for Hebron, as Abraham is buried there. Ancient Egyptian records at Tel el Amarna mention the "Habiru" in Canaan. Even Neturei Karta typically refer to the Jews in Hebrew liturgy and texts as "Israel." "Yehudim," Jews, also a synonym. Israel was a name given to Jacob, Abraham's grandson, who remained on Abraham's path, and Yehudah was leader of Jacob's sons. Thus each term is basically a synonym. Much as "Oriental" became "Asian" in US, and "Negro" became "African-American," the Reform movement and similar organizations use the term Hebrew, e.g., Hebrew Union College, Union of Am. Hebrew Congr., Hebrew Immigrant Aid, etc. The Black Hebrews another interesting topic.
