Allusions to covering the head are frequent in Scripture. Explicitly mentioned in tractate Shabbos. The Arabic term ?kufi? evidently comes from ?kippah.? Root of that word is ?bowl.? The word "kaf" appears in Scripture often, frequently refers to palm of the hand. Hebrew letter ?kaf? resembles a bowl. Perhaps some connection w/English word ?cup.? And Swiss folk-custom includes a lucky hat called a ?Kuppa-unt-Hinge.? Mandarin scholars often wore skull caps. No doubt learned from Jews. Or Swiss.
