It is definitely worth reading "A Rabbinic Exchange on Baruch Goldstein's Funeral" printed in Rav Aharon Lichtenstein's "Leaves of Faith Volume 2" In this exchange Rav Lichtenstein criticizes Rav Lior and other Religious Zionist rabbis for their response to the massacre by Baruch Goldstein. Rav Lior in his response explains that his behavior by eulogizing Baruch Goldstein did not come to show his approval for his actions, rather they came as a result of him personally knowing Baruch and the person he was before. Rav Lior argues that Baruch Goldstein hearing the Arabs chanting "Death to the Jews" probably lead to his actions. Although Rav Lior' response definitely does not sit well, to just eulogize someone ignoring the fact that they murdered people in cold blood is an extreme matter which I think everyone should be against. He called him a "holy martyr" not for the murder he committed but because he was killed acting in what he saw fit to do as a Jew. Although Rav Lior's response is extremely difficult to comprehend and should be opposed by all who hold life sacred, it is incorrect to write that he praised Baruch Goldstein because of the murder, as was implied in this article.
