Dear Rabbi Landes, I write this with respect and sadness. There is no moral or halakhic basis for what we do with Palestinian terror suspects, and the same is true for what you are proposing we do with Jewish terror suspects. Even if all the things you propose were effective deterrents -- and they are not -- they would be forbidden for many reasons, but primarily because they are unjust. I am afraid that you are thinking from your gut, and adapting halakha to confirm to that. That, dear rabbi, is very dangerous, and coming from a religious leader, I can only say, Hachamim, hizaru be-divreikhem. There are ways to fight terrorism and to bring perpetrators to justice without violating basic human rights, and the rights of their families. And of course, at the same time, the root causes have to be addressed. It is far-fetched to think of membership in a price-tag gang, or a terrorist cell, as a case of imminent pikuah nefesh, and even pikuah nefesh requires proportionality. I can only say that you, like I, are terribly hurt by this affair. But eizehu gibor, etc. Respectfully, Jerry
