The othe opinion is that their actions relative to the Gold Calf would be so much out of character to receiving the "originals", that they had to be destroyed. The Children of Israel might have thought the Golden Calf was kosher, which it it was not. So . . .Moses broke them, told God to "erase his name", and wrote another set of Tablets. By then the Chidlren of Israel understood that as we all know, Golden Calfs are not the goal of the Jewish People, that a repenting, making admends, doing God's Will are what we are expected to do. I fear, our understanding of Moses as your national leader that . . ., only scratches the surface. There's much more that beyond most of us, including me.
