People seems to be focusing too much on this or that particular group. It is silly to ignore the context in which this "escalation" is happening. Look at all the recent events, from an approaching Palestinian state, to the upset in Egypt and the tension in Syria. then add in regional powers who are more ambitious than usual (e.g. Iran). At best Israel might hope to maintain the skirmishing at current levels until a Palestinian state is secure. At worst it will reach a tipping point soon after which it will accelerate rapidly. It is an historic moment that will decide the political landscape. At this point Israel does not have firm borders and it does not have the strength to create such borders. George Washington was respected not for his skill in attacking but his skill in retreating. Unless Israel retreats as the Palestinian state is formed only one will surface. It almost certainly won't be Israel.
