Pres. Obama could benefit greatly from an in-depth discussion with Yossi Melman on the inner workings of the Middle East. For example, the Palestinians are universally hated in Jordan, Lebanon, Kuwait, etc. for the destruction that they have brought to the local populations. Egypt is afraid of the instability that Hamas will bring , not only Egypt ,but to the general region. The United States has always underestimated the nuclear capability of other countries. We mis-estimated the Soviet development of A-bombs and H-bombs by many years. We were surprised by both Pakistan and India. We certainly underestimated the North Koreans and the Iranians. The November 2007 intelligence report which stated that Iran had given up on its development programs was just a political attempt to undercut George Bush in case he had any ideas of a preemptive attack on Iran. Israel has been highly accurate in their assessments. It took a long time for the United States to acknowledge that with the help of North Korea the Syrians were actively pursuing a program to develop nuclear weapons. Unfortunately, the US intelligence community is not equipped for realistic international assessments. I wish this was otherwise. But we are an uncertain partner both due to our short attention span and our inability to understand the realities on the ground in most of the world.
