Though, I like most Israelis fed by the media frenzy believe Katzav is a slime ball and am sickened by th acts he apparently committed, I wouold expect at least a little balance in your reporting of this event. The prosecution took the position in front of the Supreme Court that in its opinion it did not have enuf evidence to convicet on the rape charges and the abuse charges wre barred by the statute of limitations. This was their justification for entering into the plea bargain deal with Katzav. So either they are liars or severely incompetent lawyers cause the court found guilt beyond almost any doubt on the same evidence. Also the way the court structured its decision (similar to the Deri court) not so much as a statement of its considerations but so as to negate any appeal is very troubling to me. it is not credible to me that the court had absolutely no hesitation or doubts ono any of the testimony in favor of conviction and no hesitation or doubt in denying 100% of the evidence of the defence. This court is also being dishonest. It just cannot be. So though katzav may very well be a disgusting character the bigger story for the average citizen is the legitimacy of the Justice system. If they go after you, the prosecutors and judges and police will bend any value and assert any lie to get you. Does that make you feel safe in this Kafkaesque democracy? Scares the begeezus out of me.
