Moroccan Jews in Israel are known to have two unusual qualities: 1. They are extremely sensitive to their personal honor, so one must be extra careful not to say something that might be perceived as an insult. 2. They are quick tempered and respond violently. They used to be called "Morocco - knife (= Heb. sakin)" during their initial period in Israel, due to a propensity to pull a knife at you when they got angry.// What happened to Peretz, the sincere social revolutionary, when he became head of Labor? Upon joining the Olmert coalition, he accepted the Defense portfolio. It had little to do with his social goals and expertise, but brought honor and paved the way to a possible future PM-ship. Then came the Hizballah kidnapping of two soldiers. Immediately, Peretz became a revived Moroccan: He rushed to war (with Olmert), viewd it as a matter of personal honor (as in saying "Nasrallah will never forget the name Amir Peretz"), and was a hawk during the war. What a pity for Peretz and Labor. Peretz can be a valuable leader in the social field, but not the top man. The Moroccan in him needs to be controlled.
