we are not told what an intellectual is, or what an intellectual giant is. was von brown an intellectual giant? was wagner? we get the impression that levy talks about intellectual giants who believe in and practice democracy. does one need to be an intellectual giant to believe in democracy? would we claim that the barber who cuts levy's hair is incapable of understanding democracy? that cannot be right. so let me propose a simple criterion for an intellectual giant: such a person must be honest and truthful. he cannot have double standards. he cannot claim that genocide committed in cambodia is less reprehensible than genocide committed elsewhere. an intellectual giant cannot support the totalitarian, anti-democratic groups of hezbollah and hamas by labeling them "freedom fighters." an intellectual giant would not compare israel with north korea. he would know that in north korea millions have been starved and tortured in gulags by the country's elites. we do not need intellectual giants who lend their support to holocaust deniars in the name of free speech. we need people who have the intuition to understand that common decency toward our fellow humans is at the heart of democracy.
