Irrespective of the arrogance and ego associated with the Jewish people, "chosen" in the Biblical text is a term describing the Jewish people as the 'light of the world'. We have been chosen to be the role model for all other people and nations - by following the ways of the L-rd as described in His blueprint of Life, His Torah. Frequently we have tried to be like all the other nations by assimilating into their societies, always to our detriment. The Torah is clear: We are HASHEM's servants because He want us to represent Him to the rest of the world - we often fail. Oh by the way, HASHEM judges the whole of the Jewish people, religious or secular or whatever as a society. If one part of that society does its own thing, then we all suffer accordingly, as we have many times in the past. Why is it so difficult to give the L-rd His due and follow His dictates to the best of our abilities and be 'good' people. If we want the L-rd's blessings, assuming that is important to the majority of Jews, then we have to deserve them!!
